I’ve always loved sharing the story of how New York’s well-to-do once shopped here—arriving by horse-drawn carriage and receiving deliveries of their purchases through what was once a private tunnel system connecting the original B. Altman department store to this very building. While the tunnels have long been sealed (so we’re told), the sense of heritage and grandeur remains, giving every event hosted here a touch of authentic New York history.

For me, the building’s story feels especially personal. My mom has spent her career in the behind-the-scenes world of fashion—working in merchandising and production—but she actually started out in department stores. I’ve always admired her work and the legacy of that industry. Department stores weren’t just places to shop—they were cultural landmarks that shaped how people experienced style, community, and aspiration across generations.

That connection between history, fashion, and storytelling has always resonated with me. As someone who loves pop culture and period shows like The Gilded Age and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I often think about how this very carriage house once stood during that era of elegance and reinvention. Every time I walk through our doors, I feel that same sense of old New York glamour and creative energy. When I first applied to work here, I knew I was stepping into a space that wasn’t just historic—it was a living piece of culture, creativity, and timeless Manhattan charm.
